American Idol

So last night we were finishing up dinner, turned on the TV and saw that American Idol was on. It was the Thursday show where they have someone voted off. To my amazement, the show kicked off with the remaining 8 contestants singing a song together. They sang, "Shout to the Lord"!

I couldn't believe it. To an audience of millions they sang about our Lord for almost five minutes. You can now purchase the song, performed by the final 8, on iTunes. Overall I'm glad they did the song.

Now...the previous night at the big "Idol Gives Back" show at the Kodak Theater in L.A. the "idols" sang "Shout to the Lord" to close the show. What are we to make of this?
Why did they change “my Jesus” to “my Shepherd” at the beginning of the song at the "Idol Gives Back" show, on this night, especially when other artists had no qualms about singing songs that explicitly mentioned Jesus?

Has “Shout to the Lord” arrived in the collective consciousness of our civil religion, much like “Amazing Grace” and other well-known hymns?

Are there Christians behind the scenes of American Idol who are promoting Christian songs?
What does it say to see Christians singing this song together with a Mormon as one of the contestants?

Did they catch enough flack to warrant a re-do on the 10th?

Sounds like maybe someone was convicted or felt a "rub" about having done it the correct way the night before. People won't forget the significance of that!

i'm excited about where it will lead. i also know that sometimes people can just take a "christian" song that makes them feel good and experience an emotion and cling to IT rather than looking to god. let's pray that the words of that song penetrated even the hardest of hearts and that it will be used to further the kingdom. great post.

I'm sorry I missed that -- you just never know what to expect on tv sometimes. :)

Dang, I missed the exciting part of the show. Then again, I don't watch TV that much. Thank you, Barry, for sharing the news.
