If You Didn't Do What You Do, What Would You Do?

Somebody asked me the question recently:
"Theoretically, if you didn't do what you do, what would you do?" If I weren't in ministry what kind of career would I be in? That's a good question. (This is the kind of question that would be a good ice breaker at a dinner party or talking to a stranger in line at the post office).

I feel as though I am wired for ministry so I'm not sure how I would answer. However, if I had to answer I would probably say:
(a) a teacher or college professor: (teaching is how I am wired and I like being around college students). (b) be in the marketing/advertising field: (marketing and using words to get a message across compellingly is a bit of a hobby for me. I love to think through how to make a good advertisement or to think up promotional ideas that might stick out...) or (c) be a designer for community development or local businesses and restaurants: (I wouldn't want to be an architect or an interior designer, but someone who consults other businesses, cities, communities, neighborhoods, restaurants and coffee shops on creating spaces to cultivate and promote community.
I'm not sure a job like that exists out there, but if it did, it would be fascinating work. Two great books on this topic are The Great Good Place and The Timeless Way of Building, if anyone is interested in this topic, too.
So let me ask you this: if you didn't do what yo do, what would you do? How would you answer that?

If I didn't work at the church...

I would want to be a Mom first of all but that's kind of a cope out so I'll pick another...

A teacher. A 5th grade elementary teacher. I love kids and I love that age. Perfect!
